Effects Of Too Much Sugar On Women’s Health And Emotions

The truth about… SUGAR.

Is there an effect when we have too much sugar, especially on women’s health and our emotions?  Let’s take a look at the effects of sugar.

According to the US Department of Agriculture average American eats about 150-170 pounds and for those who work in kgs, that’s 77kg’s of sugar every year.

If you think that you don’t like in America you aren’t having as much…think again.

  • On average Australians consume somewhere between 14-16 teaspoons of added sugars a day.
  • With a 600ml bottle of soft drink containing 16 teaspoons of sugar, if you’re consuming a bottle each day that’s the equivalent to consuming 23kg of sugar from soft drinks alone per year.

According to the NHS, British people eat 700g of sugar a week, or an average of 140 teaspoons per person

you get the picture…

Wow, imagine what that looks like.

What Are The Effects Of Too Much Sugar On Women’s Health And Emotions

Imagine 30-34 five-pound bags lined up on the counter…that’s how much sugar everyone eats on average.

Food manufacturers add sugar to 74% of packaged foods you buy in supermarkets (according to the University of Science, California).

Sugar is EVERYWHERE!

From your soft drinks and tomato sauce…to your kids’ cereal.

Examples of foods and drinks containing 6 teaspoons of sugar:

  • Large 60gm serve Nutri-Grain
  • Low-fat fruit yogurt 200gm
  • A glass of Coke (240mls)
  • Can of Red Bull (250mls)
  • 2/3 of a bottle of Gatorade (400mls)
  • 50mls of BBQ sauce

Check the labels… Sugar is the #1 listed ingredient in a lot of our common foods.

Okay, so why is this a problem?

How much should I be aiming for?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says we should be limiting our added sugar intake to 6 teaspoons per day for optimal health.

I once thought “these things just happened to us”.  I NOW think “these things happen, because of US”

We have more control over our own health and longevity than we may realize.

Effects of too much sugar on women’s health and emotions.

We are often confronted daily with many aches, pains, and discomfort, especially as women.

And too often we just brush them off, put on a brave face, and keep moving on with our already crazy busy lives.

Grabbing the next snack, biscuit, or chocolate bar

Have you ever thought about what is this doing?

Having a snack occasionally isn’t going to cause too much harm,

but,

The problem is we have been doing this day in day out, year after year and before we know it…10 or 20 years have passed by.

And, we start experiencing many of the concerns below.

How Is Too Much Sugar On Women’s Health And Emotions Effecting Us?

Then we go to the doctor and we come home with some medication that doesn’t actually FIX the problem.

What can this intake of sugar do to our bodies?

Having too much sugar can affect women’s health and emotions.

Here are 5 ways that sugar can affect women’s health.

1. OBESITY.

Which leads to diabetes and heart disease.

See, obesity is 7 TIMES MORE LETHAL than smoking a pack of cigarettes every day.

While we’re not rooting for smoking, if you look around, you may see very old people smoking.

But what you’ll probably NOT see is very old people who are really obese – because they simply don’t make it to the finish line.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, and diabetes is the 7th.

Today more than 100 million adult Americans are obese with diabetes or pre-diabetes – that’s 1 in 3!

Scary, right?

Look, we get brainwashed to eat this crap because food marketing is a multi-billion-dollar industry.

And it pays to add sugar to just about any food.

Why?

Because sugar makes you CRAVE MORE FOOD.

So you buy more, and more, and food manufacturers reap bigger profits.

That’s the ONLY reason.

Sugar is linked to insulin resistance and diabetes and blood sugar irregularities affect mood, energy, fertility, stress, and work productivity.

Elevates estrogen levels, which impacts hormonal health, e.g. menstrual irregularities, PMS, and PCOS.

2. Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is extremely common today but most people are unaware of the problem until they develop serious chronic health issues.

Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t use glucose from your blood for energy

What is the main cause of insulin resistance?
It is well established that Obesity (being significantly overweight and having belly fat), is linked to an inactive lifestyle, and a diet high in carbohydrates,
And the primary cause of insulin resistance.
The ketogenic diet may improve blood glucose (sugar) levels while also reducing the need for insulin.
Reducing high-glucose carbohydrate food intake reduces the amount of insulin circulating in the body, which reduces insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance can lead to type II diabetes if left unmanaged.

There has been a lot of research showing that a low-carb, ketogenic diet can help people lower their insulin levels to healthy ranges.

Even if you’re athletic, you can benefit from insulin optimization on keto by eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes

Prediabetes doesn’t usually have any signs or symptoms.

Classic signs and symptoms that suggest you’ve moved from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Excess hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision

Just because it is not yet Type 2 Diabetes, don’t let the “pre” fool you.

Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

But most importantly, it’s reversible.

You can prevent or delay prediabetes from developing into type 2 diabetes with simple, proven lifestyle changes.

Take simple steps every day to eat healthily, reduce sugar and simple carbohydrates from your diet, and add more physical activity to your day.

4. PMS and PCOS

Women with PCOS often have higher levels of male hormones, also known as androgens, and insulin resistance (IR) which often drives this disorder.

Due to these endocrine problems,

women with PCOS often have irregular periods, excess hair growth on the face and body, obesity as well as an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

Research shows that women with PCOS can benefit from following a low-carbohydrate or low-glycemic index (GI) diet, which can aid in managing weight loss, fertility, and reduce the risk of diabetes.

Recent studies have shown that a lowcarbohydrate, ketogenic diet can lead to weight loss and improvements in insulin resistance.

Because weight loss and improving insulin resistance may be beneficial for PCOS.

Eating low carbs is one of the most effective treatments that consistently and reliably helps with weight loss, lowers insulin levels, and reverses insulin resistance.

Therefore, a low-carb diet should be considered an option for any PCOS treatment plan and management of symptoms.

5. Emotions, Anxiety, and Depression.

Since 2005 rates of depression in the US have increased significantly.

Depression now affects more than 264 million people globally and is a leading cause of disability worldwide.

Research points to a clear connection between diet and mental health.

See the Importance of Diet and Gut Health in the Treatment and Prevention of Mental Disorders

The link between the gut and the brain goes both ways and communicates with each other.

The gut bacteria, or ‘gut bugs’, make up the microbiome feed and survive off the food we eat.  It’s not just one or two foods that make a difference in our health.

The impact of food on our gut health and mood comes down to what makes up our whole diet.

Eating lots of high salt, sugar and toxic fats, ultra-processed foods, and sugar-sweetened drinks feeds the BAD gut bugs.

If too many of the bad gut bugs thrive off our food choices, this can increase the development of mental health conditions.

How could keto be working to improve anxiety and or depression?

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in managing stress, anxiety, and mood.

Lower-than-normal levels of GABA in the brain have been linked to schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders

Some studies have found that following a ketogenic diet may increase circulating levels of GABA, potentially improving depressive symptoms

A low-carbohydrate diet incorporating fats from olive oil along with vegetables and fish characteristic of the Mediterranean Keto Diet or Clean Keto Diet may be an option for naturally improved mental health.
